Guwahati, September 9, 2014: The Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) is bracing up to host the 63rd edition of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament from September 16.
GSA Super League champions ASEB Sports Club is pitted against City Police in the inaugural match.
GSA president Munin Nobis addressing the media in a press conference said that this time the tournament will be confined to 12 teams out of which five will be city-based outfit. Nobis said that the Bordoloi Trophy, once leading soccer tournament of the country, is now in neck deep trouble and facing closure. But as the tournament is of sentimental value for the Assamese people, the GSA is bound to continue the championship.
After the new format set up by the All India Football Federation, most of the invitational tournaments in the country fell in trouble and some of the organisers even had to end the tournaments. Now, the organisers neither get sponsorship nor big teams to host their tournaments.
Teams like OIL, CAG Delhi, Sikkim United FC, Pune FC, Assam Rifles Soccer Team, Nagaland Police and Royal Wayhingdoh FC will be seen in action along with ASEB, Green Valley SC, NF Railway SC and Ganga SC in this edition of the Bordoloi Trophy.
Other GSA officials Nabab Ali, Chayaram Boro, Bhola Boro (GSA general secretary) and L Pranab Singh (football secretary) were also present in the press conference.
