In Pool D of the under-14 category, the Birjhora schoolboys defeated Bethany Convent High School (Sao Jose De Areal, Salcete) 3-0 to grab the top perch in their pool and thus qualify for the quarterfinals. 
 
As for the quarterfinal line-up, the Nagaland team will take on NCC (Maharashtra) in the first quarterfinal on Sunday with a rest day on Saturday, while Assam boys will clash with the Mizo schoolboys in the second quarterfinal. 
 
The match, which began on a dull note, picked up momentum from the 43rd minute when Raja Brahma scored the first goal for the Assam team. As if they were on cue, Narayan struck in the very next minute to consolidate their position and seven minutes later Ahmorendra netted another goal to complete the task. 
 
But it was Ramhlunchhunga's brace - the first goal coming as late as in the 36th minute to be followed by another one during injury time (51) - helped the Mizoram school beat visitors from Nepal, Lok Smriti Higher Secondary School in Pool C match which earned the Chawngfianga Middle School a last eight berth. 
 
It was a creditable display from the Mizoram boys because only a win could have seen them through to the next stage. And they did admirably to first gauge the situation with a cautious approach initially before going all out. 
 
To that extent striker Ramhlunchhunga must be praised for his presence of mind to put his team in the lead in the 36th minute. The goal only relieved tension in the camp but also pepped them to attack from both flanks and resulting in the second goal to seal the fate of the Nepal team. 
 
However, in a high-scoring match, Greenwood High School from Nagaland raised the pitch to a new level by scoring 32 goals without getting a reply from Lakshwadeep team, Government Senior Secondary School. In fact, the Nagaland team set a record of sorts in the tournament for highest goals by a team, scoring two goals more than the NCC team from Maharashtra, who beat the Sri Lankan Defence College 30-0 yesterday.

As Peng entered the Tagore International School, she was greeted by students wearing Indian traditional costumes. She noticed a group of students, including few from the northeast who greeted her Ni Hao (How are you?). 
 
Mistaking the Northeast students as Chinese, she stopped and asked one of them, Ni shì zhongguó rén” (Are you Chinese?). “Bu. Woh shi Indu ren. (No, I am an Indian),” Albert Ginsangmuam K (12), a class VII student, responded confidently. 
 
Hailing from Manipur, Albert, wearing a kurta, said he was nervous about the first interaction with Peng and he had not expected her to speak to him. 
 
“I know a bit of Chinese, but I was a bit nervous. What if I made a mistake? What would have the school said?” Albert, along with many of his classmates, has taken up Chinese language course.

A statement issued by the Office of Public Affairs, US Consulate General, Kolkata, on Thursday said that during the visit of U.S. Consul General Helen LaFave to Meghalaya from September 15-18, she met top Education officials of the State to discuss the possibilities of collaborating with RELO for capacity building and strengthening of English Language teaching among Secondary school teachers. 
 
The teachers’ training will focus on ways to integrate communicative language skill development using the current literature/reading-focused curriculum. 
 
LaFave paid a visit to NEHU and addressed students on key elements in re-imagining the U.S.-India relationship focusing on educational partnership followed by a lively question and answer session. 
 
In her remarks she highlighted that, “complementing India’s enhanced Look East Policy, the United States supports the vision of an Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor that can help bridge South and Southeast Asia – where the Indian and Pacific Oceans converge and where trade has thrived for centuries. 
 
“The Northeast plays a significant role as the region that connects India with its neighbours in the East,” she said. 
 
LaFave also visited the famed Mawphlang Sacred Grove and was struck by the rich bio-diversity of plants, flowering trees, orchids and butterflies and the preservation of the people’s rich cultural traditions. She also paid a visit to Smit village in East Khasi Hills. 
 
During her stay in Shillong, she also made a courtesy call on Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. 
 
Earlier she met with a wide range of Meghalaya society members including government officials, civil society members, business leaders and students. 
 
She began her trip by attending a meeting with local business leaders to discuss opportunities for greater economic ties in the State. The meeting was hosted by the Indian Chamber of Commerce. 
 
LaFave concluded her Meghalaya visit by hosting the alumni of different U.S. State Department funded exchange programs who briefed her on the rich traditions of Meghalaya and their future plan vis-à-vis the State.

The memorandum demanded full power to the ADCs. 
 
It added that tribal land, HAC and ADC are affected by Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council 3rd Amendments Act 2008. 
 
By virtue of the Article 371(c) of the Constitution and subsequent order date 20th June, 1972 issued by the then president VV Giri, 13 items including District Councils, economic planning, forest, land and water resources, jhum cultivation, village administration, public health and sanitation, marriage and divorce, social customs etc., are within purview of the Hill Areas Committee, the memorandum said. 
 
However, to everybody’s surprise, the said powers have been taken away from the purview of the HAC including Rural Development and Tribal Affairs, the memorandum said and added that the Minister in-charge of Tribal Affairs has nothing to do with the subject matters related to HAC because both the HAC and ADC have its own Acts. 
 
The analysis of the powers and functions of HAC shows that the Committee is a powerful instrument to safeguard the tribal interests and promote good governance and development process in the Hill Areas. So these is the right of tribals to achieve the power of the ADC, the memorandum said. 
 
HAC sans the Sixth Schedule District Autonomy cannot safeguard the political aspiration and traditional rights of the tribal people of the State. Now, it is the rights of tribals and duty to emphasise and take steps so as to fulfil the spirit and entitlements of Article 371(c) through HAC before it is too late, it added. 
 
Furthermore, ATRPFM demanded the Government to depute specialist doctors and adequate medical staff to every Government medical facilities of the hill districts.
