Guwahati, August 26, 2014: The overall flood situation in the State remains almost unchanged with the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries still flowing above their respective warning or danger levels at places and over 12 lakh people in 2,093 villages under 57 revenue circles of 16 districts still reeling under floodwaters.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC) evening flood bulletin, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri. The river is flowing above the warning level at Dibrugarh, the bulletin said.

The Subansiri is found flowing above the danger level at Badatighat, while the Desang, Dhansiri (South), Jiabharali, Kopili, Puthimari and Beki are also found flowing above their danger levels at Nanglamuraghat, Numaligarh, NT Road Crossing, Dharamtul, NH Road Crossing and at Road Bridge gauge points.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA’s) official flood bulletin, the districts of Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Kamrup, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Udalguri and Goalpara have been affected by the current wave of flood.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla today asked the departmental heads to ensure that there is no disruption in supply of essential food items, stocks of medicines, particularly those required to tackle diarrhoea, gastro-enteritis etc.

According to an official press release here, the Chief Secretary also called for steps to ensure availability of sufficient stocks of water treatment items like halogen tablets, bleaching powder etc., at the district level and sanitation facilities are available. He directed the Secretary, Water Resources to keep a constant vigil on all the vulnerable points of embankments or dykes and take immediate measures to prevent nay breach.

The Commissioner and Special Secretary, PWD was instructed to see that immediate restoration measures are taken at all the points of the National Highway.
