In a statement received here today, the KSU said that the people who were ‘deported’ were labourers engaged by the companies in the construction works of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and TB Hospital.
“These labourers were deported as they do not have Work Permit which is compulsory in the State of Meghalaya. This Work Permit is being implemented by the Government of Meghalaya after a prolonged agitation by the Union (KSU) in order to safeguard the identity of the indigenous population of the State against the unabated influx of Bangladeshis. If no stringent measures are adopted to stop the influx of Bangladeshis, then the indigenous people will be reduced to a minority in their own land,” said the KSU.
It also stated that it has been working closely with the All Assam Students’ Union and also with the North East Students’ Organisation to instill confidence among the people and to thwart any attempt to create division amongst the indigenous people of the North East.
Meanwhile, an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) delegation met the Meghalaya Home Minister, the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police and the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Law and Order). The delegation was told by the Meghalaya Government that there were two incidents concerning the people from Assam in Meghalaya during these days. One of them was connected with the assault on some Assam students within the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus and the other was connected with the exodus of the labourers from Assam from the Simplex complex.
The AGP delegation urged the Meghalaya Government to ensure safety and security to the life and property of the people from Assam in Meghalaya.
The delegation also met the Vice Chancellor of NEHU, representatives of the Assamese Students’ Association of Meghalaya and those students who were victims of assault inside the NEHU campus.
The delegation led by AGP president Atul Bora and comprising its general secretary Keshab Mahanta, spokesman Satyabrata Kalita and publicity secretary Manoj Saikia and some representatives of the Asom Yuva Parishad, was told by both the Meghalaya Government and the NEHU authorities that normalcy is returning and there should not be any apprehension about the insecurity of the Assam people in Meghalaya, said Atul Bora.
The delegation will also meet the leaders of the United Democratic Party of Meghalaya, which is a constituent of the North East Regional Parties’ Front, Bora said.
