Imphal, September 2, 2014: Panic struck vehicle owners thronged fuel stations in Imphal fearing fuel scarcity may hit Manipur, if the United Naga Council (UNC) go ahead with its proposed stir.

UNC on Monday announced an indefinite ban on movement of all kinds of vehicles along national and state highways in Naga inhabited areas from 6am of September 4 besides imposing an indefinite ban on all construction works of all national projects.

The ban on the highways and the national projects was announced to press the government of India to make a political intervention on the prevailing situation in the Naga dominated hill districts of the state.

People were seen in long beeline at the petrol pumps early morning even as the pumps opened from 7 am. Most of the petrol pumps closed down before noon citing stock exhaustion.

Later, in the afternoon, almost all the oil pumps in Imphal area were found with bills pasted “Stock Nil”.

The ban on vehicular movement along the national highways would mean disturbance in the ferrying of essential commodities including petroleum products and food items into the state.

Earlier, in the recent weeks, similar apprehension had forced panic buyers to queue up at the petrol pumps when two factions of All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) threatened to imposed economic blockade on the national highways coupled with violent confrontation on Nagaland-Assam border that disturbed vehicular movement on Dimapur-Guwahati National Highway at Golaghat.

On the other hand, after reviewing the latest development in Ukhrul district, the chief minister along with his deputy has left for New Delhi this afternoon.

The chief minister and deputy chief minister along with the outgoing Governor will meet with the Union home minister Rajnath Singh and brief him about the prevailing situation in the state, in the context of UNC’s planned stirs.
