While most of the denizens are blaming the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for this situation, many are disgusted with the town itself. “Everything is going haywire here, right from the heat to electricity, the potholed roads and water now. The situation is going from bad to worse,” echoed a section of the people in New Silchar.
The outburst of anger among the people against the incessant and long hours of load-shedding took a violent turn on Tuesday as people gheraoed the APDCL office in New Silchar area and disrupted the activities.
Asked what could be the reason for this severe power crunch, Binay Nandi, Deputy General Manager, APDCL, Cachar said that production at the Palatana power station is shut down. Nandi said that the Palatana management has kept the plant off on account of maintenance ahead of the festive season.
“Production at the Palatana base is totally shut down since last seven days which is why there is shortage of power here,” Nandi said, adding that the scenario is likely to improve in the next few days as the Palatana authorities have assured of resuming power supply from September 5.
Speaking about the requirements, Nandi said that against a peak hour requirement of 65 MW, only 38 MW is available for now. “Like every year, we are trying our best for giving better power supply during the festive season,” the DGM assured.
