Guwahati, September 7, 2014: Forensic experts in Guwahati have identified the weapons used by banned UPLA militants to kill Superintendent of Police of Hamren police district Nityananda Goswami and his personal security officer Ratul Nunisa during a counter-insurgency operation in Karbi Anglong on June 5.

The scientific evidence is expected to add teeth to the prosecution case in the court of law, experts feel.

The firearms that were used to kill both the SP and his PSO have been identified after examination of over 870 exhibits submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory, Kahilipara –which included nine AK 47 rifles and a number of magazines and bullet shells – by the Assam Police.

“The firearms and the bullets found in the bodies of the slain police personnel have matched,” a senior FSL official told this reporter.

The report of the findings reached the Criminal Investigation Department of Assam Police on September 6, sources told The Assam Tribune.

The report of the ballistic wing on the sensational murder of the SP and his PSO has been prepared and sent to the police department by the FSL in less than two months. The exhibits, according to sources, were sent to the FSL for examination on August 11,

The FSL was given exhibits collected from the place of occurrence along with the firearms that were recovered from the UPLA militants arrested in connection with the case subsequently. In one case, the police had sent 855 exhibits including eight firearms (AK 47), while in the second case 16 exhibits including a firearm, were sent.

Death of Goswami and his PSO during the encounter had sparked uproar in the State with the Home department even placing three police personnel, who were also part of the mission, on suspension for allegedly abandoning the head of the operation.

Police later arrested 10 UPLA militants from Karbi Anglong and Dimapur and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a hideout of the outfit.
