Shillong, October 8, 2014: Fifty-nine people died in flash flood and landslides triggered by cloud burst in Meghalaya, the State Government said today.
“The number of deaths due to flash floods and landslides is 59 while five persons are still missing,” Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Roytre C Laloo said.
“We have almost completed compiling our assessment of the damages caused by the flash floods and landslides. We hope to be able to complete it soon,” Laloo said.
The recovery of more bodies was made after water receded in several places in the plain areas of West Garo Hills and also in East Khasi Hills district, Revenue and Disaster Management Principal Secretary PK Srivastava said.
The September 24 cloudburst that continued for a week affected over two lakh people.
The State Government said flash floods and landslides damaged Rs 2,000 crore worth properties including livestock, roads, bridges, and agricultural produce.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is expected to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh with a complete report of the damage caused in Delhi on October 10.
Resubelpara C&RD block development officer Lina Sangma said North Garo Hills, the worst affected district, has 36 relief camps active with 31 of them in Bajengdoba and five in Mendipathar area.
Most of the people who are housed in these camps are left homeless and are waiting for help from the government.
In three blocks in West Garo Hills district – Selsella, Dadenggre and Trikikilla – most relief camps were vacated even as seven out of 27 camps are still active.
