Guwahati, August 25, 2014: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has decided to take steps to improve relations between the people living on both sides of the inter-state boundary between Assam and Nagaland to defuse the tension in the area.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, NESO adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that all the constituents of the organisation would meet soon to chalk out strategies to improve people-to-people contact between the people of both the states. He said that the Governments of the two states miserably failed to provide security to the people living in the border areas and to prevent recurrence of untoward incidents. He said the NESO leadership started discussions with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) immediately after the recent incidents along the inter-state boundary in Golaghat district and senior office-bearers of both the organisations visited the area.

Bhattacharya said as both the state governments failed to deal with the situation, improvement of people-to-people contact is the only way out to deal with the situation. The AASU members visited the affected area immediately after the incidents, while the NSF teams visited the other side of the boundary. Now efforts would be made to undertake joint visits to instill confidence in the minds of the people on both sides of the boundary, he added.
