The arms and ammunition recovered were – a AK 56 rifle, two Light Machine Gun magazines, two 303 rifles (a without butt), five live shells of M-16 rifle, 42 bullets of 303 rifle, a pen pistol and its 50 rounds of bullets which were wrapped in some rags and buried under ground in the house yard of Marqus, police said.
According to LR Bishnoi, BTAD, IGP Marqus resides in Dimapur in Nagaland and sends the consignment of sophisticated fire arms and ammunition, using women and teenagers as couriers, to the NDFB’s Songbijit faction in Chirang district where the militant group is active.
Marqus has admitted that since 2005 he has been involved in arms supply racket. He had earlier supplied arms for Ranjan Daimary faction of NDFB and now he is working for the NDFB’s Songbijit faction, the IGP said.
On the other hand the local residents of Bamungaon said that police first picked up Marqus’s younger brother Mithun Narzary (30) who had been released later under public pressure before arresting Marqus on Saturday from Bongaigaon area.
This is the fifth successful recovery of arms and ammunition by the Chirang police and is a major blow for the NDFB’s Songbijit faction which has been facing bitter criticism for the killing of a school student Priya Basumatary from different quarters.
Marqus has been interrogated at Chirang district headquarters Kajalgaon for vital clues on arms racket.
