Imphal, September 3, 2014: The deadline set for the implementation of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment, 2012 will soon expire on September 6. Manipur University officials have assured the State government to implement it within 15 days last month.

In a press meet at its Nagaram office, All Tribal Students Union of Manipur president Maun Tombing urging the State government to implement the Central Educational Institutions Amendment Act at the earliest stated that if the government doesn’t act quickly and intervene, it will only be inviting various agitations in the State.

ATSUM intends to start the agitations soon if MU authorities fail to keep its words but on account of the indefinite blockade imposed by UNC from September 4 in the entire hill districts, our agitations will have to defer, Tombing said.

Meanwhile, Education secretary Lovejoy Shimray said ATSUM has expressed gratitude to the State government for considering its demand of regularising contract lectures in a cabinet decision on Tuesday.

However, ATSUM has expressed its disappointment with the cabinet decision to sideline the issue of the contract teachers (Primary, Hindi Matriculate and Graduate) recruited on 2006.

ATSUM wants the government to give an assurance for considering the plight of these teachers who have been suffering since 2006 till date, Tombing said, adding, these teachers were given an emolument of Rs 4000 till 2008 and there were no further extensions on the matter.

It is unfortunate that the teachers of 2006 have been left out and contractual lecturers recruited in 2010 were considered by the cabinet, he said. Tombing said the contractual teachers of 2006 were verified again and 772 teachers were found to be genuine teachers but nothing has been done by the government till now.
