Guwahati, October 5, 2014: Asomiya Sahitya Sanmiloni, a literary organisation, has undertaken a mega project of publishing the history of all districts of Assam.

The Sanmiloni has almost completed the first book of the project, which will cover the history of Sonitpur district. It will be released at the Sanmiloni’s first biennial session at Tezpur, the district headquarters of Sonitpur, in January. “The project was a major initiative of the Sanmiloni after it came into being last year. The purpose of the project was to capture different aspects of the districts of Assam,” said Madhuryya Mondit Barua, the general secretary of the Sanmiloni.

Barua said they have made significant progress in writing history of Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Barpeta and Dhubri districts as well which are expected to be released within six months of the Tezpur session.

The biennial session will be held at Joymoti Pothar in Tezpur with a four-day programme, starting January 8.

Veteran singer and lyricist Lakhyahira Das will be the president of the session.

The organisers have invited Jnanpith Award winner Kedarnath Singh, one of the prominent modern Hindi poets, to be the chief guest of the session. Bangladesh University vice-chancellor Pabitra Sarkar has also given consent to attend the session. Besides, many prominent personalities of the state will attend it.

The Sanmiloni was formed following an organisational crisis in Asam Sahitya Sabha, the largest literary body in the state, in 2012 when five former presidents of the Sabha gave up their membership as mark of protest against the crisis.

Writers and well-wishers of the Sabha, who were dissatisfied at its functioning first, held a meeting in Nagaon on September 9 on how to give it a proper direction.

Although no fruitful outcome came out in the meeting, in February, the Sanmiloni came into being. It held its first state convention at Nagaon with writer Hiren Gohain as its president.

Barua said they would also give a thought on the demand of Assamese people for a separate slot for Assamese script in the Unicode Consortium.

He said they would bring up the issue in the meetings of their language committee.
