Guwahati, September 30, 2014: A one-man judicial enquiry commission has been constituted in Assam to investigate the killing of school girl Priya Basumatary allegedly by NDFB(S) terrorists suspecting her to be police informer.

“The commission headed by Justice (Retired) BD Agarwal, a retired Judge of Gauhati High Court was formed on September 25,” an official release said.

The Commission is constituted to enquire the circumstances leading to the killing of Basumatary allegedly by NDFB extremists on August 20 in Chirang district, it added.

The commission will also look into whether there was any inaction on the part of police administration and district administration.

“The commission will also suggest measures so that such incidents can be prevented in future,” the statement said adding that the report would be submitted within three months.

On August 20, five NDFB(S) terrorists were killed at Dwimuguri in Chirang in an encounter by a joint team of Assam Police and Army.

Following this, a group of NDFB(S) militants came to the village in the same evening from the adjoining dense jungles of Chirang Reserve Forest and dragged out Basumatary from her house and shot her dead in front of her parents and villagers.

Next day, NDFB(S) released a video to local electronic media and said that they had killed the girl for being “an informer and our five members were not killed by the Army but members of NDFB (Daimary) group”.

Police and Army could not recover the body for more than 24 hours saying that “the village is located in a very remote area and only approachable on foot” and “the local villagers were unwilling to co-operate out of fear”.

Villagers recovered the body and brought it to Salbari and then police team took it to Kajalgaon Civil Hospital on August 21.
