Tamenglong, August 29, 2014: Expressing strong reservation against the alleged plan of the State Government to inaugurate the incomplete suspension bailey bridge built over Barak river between Dikiuram and Katang village, on September 1, the Zeliangrong Youth Front has urged the State Government to defer inauguration of the same till necessary technical rectification is made in the interest of the general public.
Constructed under the NEC funding, the bridge is to connect Nagaland and Manipur. ZYF team detected serious technically defects during a physical inspection conducted by the team, a press release issued by ZYF general secretary stated. Iron bar on both sides of the railings were yet to be fixed and the cables overlapped on the left side of Katang village and others. With these defects, the bridge would not be able to bear heavy laden vehicles.
ZYF had timely communicated the matter with the concerned authority for necessary rectification before inauguration, the press release added. However, no such action has been taken till date.
Stating that the Government should take responsibilities for any tragedy that should occur on the bridge, ZYF said that they would seek help from appropriate law court in case the State Government moves ahead with the inauguration function without first rectifying the technical loopholes.
The construction work of the bridge started some six or seven years ago with strong pressure from Zeliangrong people, the press release informed. State Government has been deferring the work without any reason of justification. Other developmental projects in Tamenglong district have also failed to serve any intended purpose since projects are inaugurated before completion.
ZYF further urged the State Government to discontinue the trend of inauguration of projects or developmental works before completion.
