Shillong, October 28, 2014: Truckers in Jaintia Hills have demanded that a Land Custom Station (LCS) must come up at Kuliang, a hamlet close to Indo-Bangla border in East Jaintia Hills District.
The demand has been raised by the Jaintia Hills Truck Owners’ Association (JHTOA) today before the Meghalaya government saying that installation of the LCS would boost trade and help the economy. “We demand that a LCS be installed at Kuliang village as it would improve the commercial activities with neighbouring Bangladesh,” JHTOA president Balen Thubru said in a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
He said that the lack of LCS was inhibiting local trade in the area, which has close proximity with Bangladesh. “Keeping in mind the rich resources of Jaintia Hills, we feel that a LCS would be ideal for promoting trade in the region,” he added.
The trucker association head said that at present the people of the two districts of Jaintia Hills has to rely on the Land Custom Station at Dawki to export their goods, which is far away and therefore it not only increases the cost, but also increases the delivery time for export to Bangladesh.
“On several occasions trucks loaded with goods have to wait for four to five days for getting clearance due to heavy rush at the Dawki Land Custom Station. The LCS at Dawki is overburdened with traffic,” the president said.
He said that the LCS at Kuliang would not only ease the traffic, but would also help in speedy transportation of goods from Jaintia Hills to Bangladesh. Thubru further reminded that the State government had in the early Nineties mooted the idea of opening a LCS at Kuliang, but the proposal never took off.
Jaintia Hills has been severely hit by the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) ban on coal and limestone mining.
