Tura, October 28, 2014: Militants today kidnapped a school teacher from his residence at Damas Kaksona in the North Garo Hills District this morning. The teacher, identified as Maliram Rabha, was kidnapped by three gun-toting militants who then took him towards Chitukona, further into the jungle. The incident took place about 120 kms from the town of Tura.

While the kidnappers identified themselves as belonging to the Achik Matgrik Tiger Force (AMTF), the police stated they have definite proof of the kidnapping being the handiwork of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) area commander Philiport.

It may be mentioned here that around 4 months back, one Sandia Sangma, a primary school teacher, was kidnapped, but he was released on the same day following a huge protests from all sections of the people in the Garo Hills region.

“This is a bogus group being used by the GNLA members to kidnap and extort. There is no AMTF and as they do not want to tarnish the image of GNLA, they are using this bogus group to continue their own activities. We are certain that this is the handiwork of Philiport,” said JFK Marak, SP of North Garo Hills.

“Philiport and six other members of the GNLA were seen by locals near the jungles of Damas Matchkol last evening and they were also seen this morning, going towards the Chipakram jungle,” Marak added. “We believe they are looking to ensure money for the upcoming season. The ban on coal mining has been a huge setback for them as well as many other militant outfits, and this has made them desperate to earn through kidnapping for ransom,” he added.
