Shillong, September 28, 2014: The Assam Rifles, the oldest para-military force in the country, has ordered a departmental inquiry into the alleged cash-for-contract scam exposed in a sting operation by a Delhi-based magazine.

“We have initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter which is being conducted through the vigilance wing of the force,” Assam Riffles spokesperson Lt Col Sunil Rawat said here on Friday.

A former jawan-turned-contractor CK Matthew, who reportedly initiated the sting operation against Assam Rifles officers and others, was called for deposition of the original footages for necessary actions, he said.

Admitting that the matter was a serious one, Assam Rifles spokesperson said the departmental inquiry would get to the very cause and roots of the problem which has tarnished the image of the force.

The 15-minute-long video codenamed ‘Operation Hilltop’ released by Tehelka magazine on Thursday evening showed 13 persons from various posts of the Assam Rifles allegedly taking bribe from an approved contractor.
