Shillong, September 1, 2014: The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has decided to adopt a zero tolerance policy against anyone found to be consuming alcohol in the University campus.

The decision came a day after a group of miscreants barged into the NEHU campus on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon and clashed with students resulting in injuries to them.

According to reports, around 200 persons from outside entered the campus on Saturday night and assaulted the undergraduate students of Technology and Law at the NEHU hostel which has a mixed group of students, mostly from Assam.

NEHU Acting Vice Chancellor P Shukla said that he has requested the District Administration to monitor the law and order situation in the campus. Besides, a decision was taken to strengthen the security apparatus in the campus.

Shukla also informed that the University would now take measures like installing CCTV cameras and operate patrol vehicles to ensure that security of the University is not breached.

He said that the incident should be seen as a dispute between individuals and not between communities, even as he sought to clarify that his priority is to ensure that no violence takes place in the campus.

Meanwhile, the NEHU authorities held a meeting with District police on Monday to discuss the overall law and order situation in the campus.

East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang said that the city police have issued certain guidelines to the University authorities to make the campus safe and secure.

Meanwhile, the students of the University have unanimously resolved to demand installation of CCTV cameras in the University campus.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the students convened by the KSU, NEHU Unit in the presence of KSU president Daniel Khyriem along with other members of the central body to take stock of the ‘tension’ which had emerged following the clash in the University.

Speaking to reporter, Khyriem claimed that KSU had to intervene into the matter following a brawl between students of two different departments.

“In the meeting the various unions have decided that no alcohol would be allowed to be taken in or consumed inside the University campus,” Khyriem said, adding, “Strict action will be taken against violators.”
The KSU president said that they have also decided to form a conglomeration of the different students’ bodies.

“The forming of students’ conglomeration would help stem out any incident which could lead to communal flare up,” he said

Meanwhile, leaders of NEHUSU also give assurance to all the students hailing different states and urged them not to be scared since the issue had been resolved.

The Union also asked the students not to spread rumours and to live in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
An FIR against the miscreants has also been lodged by the University administration and the legal action will take its course, NEHUSU said.
