The case of update of NRC, which is the outcome of a writ petition (civil) filed by Assam Public Works (APWs), came up for hearing before the Division Bench of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice RK Agrawal. The petitioner was represented by its counsel Arvind Kumar Sharma.
Hajela, who was asked to appear personally before the court, was asked about the time-frame by when he proposed to wind up the NRC update work. However, the Bench refused to accept the time-frame and indicated that it wanted the project work to be over by early 2016.
Incidentally, Assam goes to Assembly elections in 2016.
The Bench then directed Hajela to file an additional affidavit and appear personally in court on October 8 with details, including process, time, work done till date.
APWS president Aabhijit Sharma told newsmen that the Court has refused Hajela’s time-frame of December 2016. The Bench wants NRC to be completed by February or March 2016.
The Court asked NRC coordinator Hajela to submit a confidential report in sealed cover to the Register General of Supreme Court about the revised time schedule, other work, further steps, measures to be taken, difficulties he is facing if any in the smooth exercise regarding update of NRC on October 8, Sharma said.
He will not consult with any officials of the Government of Assam and Government if India or any other department and it will be done with complete confidentially, Sharma claimed.
The Court fixed the next date of hearing on October 16.
