New Delhi, August 31, 2014: The Hmar Students Association organized a freshers meet as well as celebrated the platinum jubilee of the organization at Vishwa Yuva Kendra in Delhi on Saturday. Advice to students who have come to study in Delhi and a cultural programme including the famed bamboo dance ‘Fahrel Tawk Lam’ marked the occasion. Prominent members of the community addressed the gathering.

Mercy Lalumpui spoke of the importance of going back to the roots through cultural performances. She said, “When we are away from home, such cultural meets help us remember our ancestors and where we came from. The bamboo dance requires a lot of skills and practice and is an integral part of our culture.” Her advice to especially the girls who have come to study in Delhi was to be vigilant at all times and avoid walking through suspicious areas at night alone.

General Secretary of the association, Zacharia Varte spoke on how beneficial their association has been for the community. He apprised, “In its 75 years of serving the nation, our association has done a great deal of work to bring together the Hmar people from different states. To put forward their common needs to the government, provide a common platform for the betterment of the society and community as a whole has been done.”

Varte also advised freshers on the Dos and Don’ts in Delhi. “It is important for them to know about their legal rights, the Dos and Don’ts in Delhi and they must remember firstly that when they are in public they are representing the community. So they must be careful and well informed, but if there is any wrong done to them , we along with community leaders will fight for justice because this is our land too.”

CH Vunga, Chairman of the Delhi Hmar Welfare Association spoke on how the students should focus on the primary purpose of why they came to Delhi. “They must never lose focus of their main purpose for coming to Delhi and must make use of all the facilities offered here.”

Many communities and tribes from the various North East states are having such freshers meets in Delhi currently. This is not just to make the freshers feel welcome in new city but more importantly to guide them, help them and ensure that they remain safe especially as Delhi is more infamous for crimes than any other city in India.
