Tura, October 27, 2014: Williamnagar town today observed a 12-hour business shutdown in protest against the unwarranted killing of Rongsak trader Bharat Singh Sekhawat. A silent rally was also taken out by about 2,000 men and women to express solidarity with the family of the victim.
Joining in the condemnation of the cold blooded killing of businessman Bharat Singh Sekhawat, several NGOs of Williamnagar town have expressed their solidarity with the family of the victim. The NGOs not only condemned the killing but also demanded the severest of punishment for the perpetrators of the crime.
The GSU, AIGU, FAF, Mothers’ Federation, ICFS, FKJGP and AYF have in a joint statement stated their condemnation of the crime. “The businessman was killed despite the fact that money had been paid for his release as was demanded by his kidnappers. His cold-blooded and unnecessary killing is condemned in the strongest words”, said the release.
Sekhawat was kidnapped on October 15 by five cadres of ASAK who demanded an amount of Rs 1 crore and finally settled for Rs 16 lakh, which was paid on October 21. He was, however, killed on the same day by the ASAK, allegedly at the behest of the AMEF chief Jack Marak.
The five then surrendered to the South Garo Hills police. The murder was traced to the five and most of the ransom money was recovered as well as the body of the victim. The brother of the leader of the five ASAK cadres, who came to receive the ransom money, along with the parents, were arrested for being accomplices.
