Imphal, September 29, 2014: Under the sponsorship of National Commission for Women, a two-day legal awareness programme, organised by Development Centre of Manipur (DCOM), has kick started at Hotel Krishtina from today.
Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women Irengbam Ibetombi and DCOM vice-chairman Puyam Biren graced the opening function as chief guest and president respectively.
In her keynote address, DCOM secretary general Sorojini Laishram said that the population of Manipur according to 2011 Census is 27,21,756, out of which 13,69,764 are males and 13,51,992 are females.
Saying that the number of unemployed youth is increasing day by day, Sorojini said that corruption and favouritism have been giving a negative impact on the minds of these youth.
Maintaining that there is no let up in the rate of crime against women as well at this computer age, the secretary general said that suicide and murder cases are happening every now and then.
Moreover, cyber crime has become a major menace not only to females but also to male members of the society, she added.
She said that stringent punishment must be given to those culprits who indulge in crime against women.
Regarding separation and divorce cases, Sorojini opined that early marriage is the major reason for these cases.
Early marriage is not permitted by the law as well, Sorojini said and added that parents must give proper advice to their children in order to avoid such instance.
