Aizawl, September 19, 2014: Acting on a tip off Mizoram police arrested three cadres of Hmar rebel outfit Hmar Peoples’ Convention (D) on Wednesday night.

Sources further said that the three cadres were arrested at Champhai in Kolasib district and were involved in extortion in the name of the Hmar militant group active in Mizoram.

They were allegedly engaged in extortion money from the farmers in Chemphai area near the Assam-Mizoram border area, officials said.

The arrested cadres allegedly confessed to the police about their crime and it is learned that on September 2, an extortion letter was served to the farmers demanding Rs. 4,00,000, said Kolasib Addl. SP MS Dawngkima.

The arrested trio were Lalrochhunga (41) s/o HZ Siama, Hmarkhawmawi, Cachar district, Assam, Hrangbiaka s/o Hawpa (L), Ankhasuo, Manipur and Hrangthangvela (38) s/o Sawia (L), Rawvakawt, Manipur.

Other than Hrangbiaka, Lalrochhunga and Hrangthangvela have lived in Mizoram with their family.

Police sources said that on September 2, the three went to a Champhai paddy rice area and asked farmers to pay the amount before September 12 but as per police instruction the farmers refused to pay the amount to the HPC (D) cadres and on September 14 they threatened the farmers to pay the money.

Acting on a tip-off Mizoram police had nabbed them on September 17 night at Saiphai village.

Kolasib Addl. SP said that necessary action will be taken inorder to nab the militants and asked the public not to be panicked while carrying police actions in the area.
