Imphal, September 22, 2014: A fisherman’s wife has created history in Manipur’s child birth record by giving birth to quintuplets, four baby girls and one baby boy, within ten minutes in a government hospital here on Monday, but one baby girl expired, with the rest four surviving.

The condition of two more baby girls, one weighing 800 gm and the other 900 gm, who were still in the intensive care unit at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital, is said to be critical. The two others, including the first born baby girl and the third born baby boy, both weighing around 900 gm each, are stable till the filing of this report, according to RIMS Hospital sources here.

Oinam Gita (35), who was already a mother of four children, went into labour at just 28 weeks on Monday afternoon after she was referred from a district hospital and delivered the babies with the help of three young doctors – Sivani, Tete and Arahan who started the procedure at 1:05 pm and completed it by 1:11 pm, to become the proud mother of the quintuplets.

The condition of 37-year-old fisherman Santa’s wife Gita, who is a resident of Thanga Samukol village in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, is said to be stable.

Dr L Ranabir, head, department of paediatrics at RIMS, speaking to media soon after the historic incident at his hospital, said that they are monitoring the babies. Stating that today’s incident was first of its kind in the RIMS Hospital, he added, “the obstetric team of the hospital is trying to help them.”

In India, Anju Kushwaha, a 28-year-old woman from Satna district in Madhya Pradesh gave birth to ten babies at the same time in December last year, but none of them survived.
