New Delhi, October 16, 2014: Less than 24 hours after three students from the North-east were mercilessly beaten up yesterday in Bangalore for being unable to speak Kannada, two boys from Nagaland were beaten up in the Sikandarpur area of Gurgaon in the early hours of this morning, after which all the people hailing from North-east living in the area were allegedly told to vacate their premises by the local residents.
Meanwhile, concerned over the attacks, the Home Ministry today sought a report from the Haryana government detailing the incident and the steps taken to nab the accused, according to a PTI report. In a communication to the Haryana government, the Home Ministry said steps should be taken immediately against the guilty and the report detailing the incident should be sent as early as possible.
As per eyewitness accounts, the two victims of the incident, who had moved to Sikandarpur recently, were beaten up by six-seven boys with cricket bats and hockey sticks and the attackers later shaved off their hair. The victims were also warned against informing the police. However, the injured youths filed an FIR and sought help from the higher authorities in New Delhi to nab the culprits.
One of the injured youths has since been admitted in the Safdarjung Hospital while the police has taken the other boy to the incident site to help them in the investigation.
Congress MP Ninong Ering strongly condemned the assault and stated that only by passing a legislation and imposing strict punishment that such racial attacks can be stopped.
“I strongly condemn the attacks. I have heard that the people of the locality of Sikandarpur have said that they will not allow any more North-eastern people to live there. We are an integral and essential part of India, and we do not appreciate it if we are called citizens of China,” he said.
Chairman of the North East MPs’ Forum PA Sangma said that he has spoken to the Haryana Chief Minister and Union Home Secretary expressing concern about the safety and security of the people of the North-east.
