New Delhi, October 8, 2014: Kiyang Kasiya Memorial Tribal School from Assam beat Charity School from Nagaland 2-0 to enter the Under-17 Girls final in the 55th Subroto Cup international football tournament at Ambedkar Stadium here today.
Nayanmoni and Macha Sharma were the goal-getters for the winners.
The Assam girls will meet their counterparts from Haryana in the final on October 10.
Nagaland not only had a good ball possession but also made very good attempts at the goal. It was their misfortune that the Nagaland girls could not covert those good chances into goals.
Added to their misery was a howler by Nagaland custodian Khrolo-U very early in the match which changed the complexion of the semifinal.
The Assam girls were accurate with their moves and eventually struck through Nayanmoni in the seventh minute when the striker made most of a goof-up by Nagaland goalkeeper.
With a 1-0 cushion, Assam girls played out the time in the first half and were also successful in keeping the Nagaland forwards away from any harm.
After changing ends, both teams not only slowed down the tempo and waited for the other team to make mistakes. But the two defences held out for most of the second session. Yet Assam’s Macha Sharma created a way through Nagaland defence in the injury time to score the second goal of the team just before the long whistle.
In Under-17 boys, Sports Authority of India team from Assam in Group C sailed into the quarterfinals, beating Navrachana International School from Gujarat 6-0.
Kerala’s MSP Higher Secondary School boys also made the quarterfinals cut.
