Imphal, October 03, 2014 : With an eye on saving the Loktak Lake which is the only floating lake in the world due to its floating phumdis, the 25th Loktak Ningsing Numit will be celebrated at Sendra Tourist Resort, Thanga in Bishnupur district on October 8.
Informing this at a press meet here at Manipur Press Club, MLA T Mangibabu said that Chief Minister O Ibobi will attend the observance function during which several experts will speak on measures which need to be taken up to counter potential threats faced by the lake so as to maintain its natural look.
He further said that soil test of the locations for erecting pillars for cable car which will connect Sendra with Karang through Chaoba Hill has been already conducted and added that there is a government's plan to develop tourist destinations in and around Loktak at an estimated cost of Rs 48 crores.
H Sanayaima, ex-Minister & president of Loktak Lake Development Organization who was also present during the meet stated that the Loktak Lake which is the largest freshwater in the entire northeast is a source of livelihood for many people and noted that there will be adverse affects on the climatic condition of the State if the lake is dried up due to several factors.
Saying that a temple of Loktak Lairembi Ema should be constructed as a sacred place for worshipping, he maintained that the Loktake Lake has been playing a big role in developing tourism in the State.
