Guwahati, August 27, 2014: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today announced that the State government would constitute a Flood and Erosion Protection Authority on its own with a Rs 1,000-crore fund to strengthen the existing embankments and build new ones to replace the ones that have outlived their utility.

After reviewing the flood situation in a meeting in Lakhimpur today, Gogoi said that the new authority would be in addition to the proposed Brahmaputra Valley River Authority. “The new authority will take up long term anti-erosion measures, including dredging of the tributaries of the Brahmaputra river to minimise the impact of floods and erosion,” he said.

Earlier, Gogoi made an aerial survey of the worst flood-hit Dhemaji district and flood-affected Lakhimpur district and Majuli subdivision under Jorhat district. He was accompanied by Minister for Water Resources Rajib Lochan Pegu and senior officials of Water Resources and Revenue & Disaster Management Departments. He made an aerial survey of Bamungaon, Sisirgaon, Duerighat, Rekha Chapori of Dhemaji district and Bihpuria, Narayanpur, Panigaon, Naobaicha of Lakhimpur district and also Majuli subdivision for almost two hours on an Army chopper.

Later, the Chief Minister reviewed the flood situation with the district administrations of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur at the Lilabari Airport VIP Lounge. The administrations of both the districts gave PowerPoint presentations to the Chief Minister. In Lakhimpur district, seven revenue circles have been reeling under flood waters covering 240 villages. 1.14 lakh people have been affected. Total cropped area affected is 7,836.25 hectare. Four persons died, while one is reported to be missing. Two breaches have occurred resulting in washing away of two bridges and 17 culverts. Immediate temporary restoration works have been taken up in vulnerable locations of the embankments. In Dhemaji district, 3.20 lakh people have been affected covering 718 villages under four Revenue Circles. Total cropped area affected is 43,843 hectare. Three persons lost their lives. 69 relief camps have been opened housing 43,728 inmates, said an official release.
