The MHA Addl Secretary accompanied by Sishu Kumar, joint secretary of MHRD, Mukesh Singh, Dy DG, Ministry of Social Justice and Shambhu Singh, joint secretary, MHA are scheduled to inspect the refugee camps on Tuesday. “The team will be visiting the refugee camps in Kanchanpur on Tuesday to see the living conditions of refugees and their problems”, said a senior State Government official.
Three officials of the State administration including Secretary, Revenue department,will also join the team. Four officials of the Union Government are scheduled to leave the State on Thursday.
Following a writ petition, the High Court of Tripura asked the Union Government to submit a report on the condition of Reang refugees sheltered in Kanchanpur after conducting an on-the-spot inspection. The report will have to be placed before the court by September 23. Tuesday’s visit to the refugee camps is a follow-up action of the directive by the High Court.
Meanwhile, two days ahead of MHA team’s visit, Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya visited the refugee camps at Naisingpara and Ashapara in Kanchanpur and held meetings with refugee leaders and inmates.
During the visit, the Governor enquired on various issues confronting the displaced victims sheltered in six relief camps. Displaced people under the banner of Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) presented a memorandum to the Governor seeking arrangement of drinking water, health sub centre, Central security force, old-age pension, electricity and better schooling for their children and others. They also demanded a separate autonomous district council under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in Mizoram if they are repatriated there.
After hearing the grievances, the Governor assured them of taking all possible steps to address their problems. Further, he asked the District Magistrate Sandeep K Rathod to look into their grievances.
The team would visit the camps tomorrow where around 33,000 displaced Reang/Bru people from Mizoram were staying for 17 years due to ethnic problem in the neighbouring State.
The seven-member team, headed by Ministry of Home Affairs Additional Secretary Rajib Gauba, consists of representatives from Human Resource Development Ministry, Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry, Tripura Government and NGOs.
