Meet on Juvenile Justice Act concludes

Guwahati, August 25, 2014: With key suggestions focused on the importance of leveraging technology to improve coordination among various government departments, generate awareness and sensitization and need to promote participation of young people, the two-day Regional Round Table Conference of North Eastern States and Sikkim on Effective Implementation of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000 concluded on Sunday.

The conference paved the way for a comprehensive dialogue and sharing on the gaps and challenges in the implementation of the Act, good practices and recommendations.

State-wide scenarios on status of the implementation of the JJ Act and key challenges were presented by the Judges of the respective High Courts and other key stakeholders, including Departments of Police and Social Welfare of the seven north-eastern States and Sikkim.

The conference was inaugurated by Justice Madan B Lokur, representing the Supreme Court Committee on Juvenile Justice.

The break-out groups, created to make the conference more fruitful, deliberated on way forward and suggested recommendations on the themes like Child Welfare Committees, Juvenile Justice Boards, management and functioning of institutions and providing effective legal aid to children.

Participants included key officials from the Departments of Social Welfare, State Child Protection Society, State Police- CID, State Legal Services Authorities, Superintendents of government-run Children’s Homes and Observation Homes for children in various States, ChildLine and NGOs working within the juvenile justice system.
