Itanagar, August 25, 2014: Flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant heavy rains for the last couple of days have claimed one life and completely damaged three houses at Sagalee, the hometown of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, taking the rain-related death toll in Papum Pare district of Arunachal to three.

The victim, identified as Techi Yadik, a village woman of Rachi (Leporiang) was buried alive when a massive landslide caused by heavy showers crushed the house she was staying at Dapo Colony in Sagalee in the wee hours today and her body was retrieved with the help of a JCB later in the afternoon.

Two minors were buried alive and another was injured critically in a landslide at Itanagar on August 17 last.

The Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1.5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Sagalee provided immediate relief of Rs 20,000 to the relatives of the deceased while two other landslide-hit families were provided Rs 10,000 each as interim relief.

Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today sounded an alert in the face of flood fury that has gripped parts of Arunachal Pradesh and appealed the people to remain alert, as almost all the rivers, streams and rivulets in the State are in spate threatening major towns including Tezu, Namsai, Pasighat and Mebo and surrounding areas.

The Chief Minister, who held a series of meetings with senior officers to assess the flood situation and steps initiated to provide solace to the people, expressed deep concern at the massive devastations caused by the torrential rains for the last three months.

He said that flood havoc has disrupted communication links, inundated human habitations, washed away livestock, homes and hearths in different parts of the State.

While stating that the need of the hour was to take precautionary measures, shift to safer locations from the low-lying areas for safety and staying alert, Tuki directed the district administrations, particularly disaster management department to take all possible steps for the safety and security of the masses inhabiting areas located along the river basins.
