Jorhat, September 11, 2014: Assam Women’s University was inaugurated by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Jorhat on Thursday.

Addressing the first 65 students of the first batch of the women’s university, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, “It is an important day in the history of Assam. By sheer hard work we made the Assam Women’s University dream come true after the idea was conceptualized two years back. Women empowerment is baseless without first educating the women. Women play an important role in character development of any individual and that is why through education women can become self sufficient. This university is unique as it will have courses in diploma, certificate, graduate, masters and doctorate.”

Noted litterateur Prafulla Rajguru said, “Though there are about five such universities elsewhere in India, the Assam Women’s University in Jorhat is the first of its kind in the entire Northeast. Post independence the quest for knowledge and higher education increased but even now in the 21st century, 15 per cent of the country’s total population has access to higher education compared to the 25 per cent in China. Establishment of more such universities is necessary.”

Also present in the inaugural meet were Assam Agriculture University Vice–Chancellor KM Bujarbaruah, former Justice SN Phookon, Jorhat DC Solanki Vishal Vasant and Registrar Trishna Gohain.
