Dibrugarh, September 12, 2014: Condemnation over the decision of the Chief Minister to withdraw Assamese language as State language from Barak Valley continues to pour in.
Through a notification issued on Tuesday, the Political Department of the State directed the removal of Assamese language from Barak Valley. As part of the ongoing protests, activists of the Dibrugarh town committee of Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Amolapatty here on Thursday. The demonstrators shouted slogans against the Chief Minister. The organization warned him that they would not tolerate any slight to the Assamese language.
The Sadou Asom Mottock Yuba Chatra Sanmilan (SAMYCS) also criticized the decision, calling it an insult to Assamese language. They stated that the people would not tolerate it and demanded the return to the former status. The Sanmilan also issued a warning that the Chief Minister would have to face the consequences if their demand was not met.
