Shillong, August 31, 2014: Four students of Law and Bio-tech departments of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) were assaulted by miscreants inside the University campus last night.

The incident occurred when some students of Law and Biotech hostels got into a scuffle over a late night party on Saturday. Few students from Law hostel, according to some witnesses, locked up a Biotech student inside the hostel room and assaulted him.

Students later chased the assailants out of the hostel room and later met the Vice Chancellor P Shukla over the incident.

Later, a meeting between NEHU Assam Students’ Association general secretary Rishikesh Rajkhowa and NEHU Students’ Union vice president Shiningstar Kharbihkhbaw was held this morning and both sides agreed to maintain peace inside the campus.

However, during the course of the meeting assailants went on the rampage and assaulted three other students inside their hostel room. The students are being treated at the Shillong Civil Hospital.

After the incident, the VC asked the district administration to arrange for police protection in the campus. Students have blamed inadequate security in the campus for the trouble.

“We have asked district administration for their cooperation in providing security to the students,” Shukla said.

Former NEHU Professor Apurba Barua termed the incident as unfortunate and also questioned the administration’s role in providing security in the campus. He further said that the incident should not be given a communal colour.

Meanwhile, police forces were sent to the campus for security in the campus.
