Shillong, September 14, 2014: Though four persons involved in the recent looting of ATM at Nongpoh have been arrested, but police is yet to recover the looted amount — Rs 26 lakh.

The clever thieves bought high end motor cycles, costly cell phones and expensive clothes for the families in view of upcoming festive season with that money.

In a swift action, Ri Bhoi police on Friday arrested four people involved in the looting Rs 26 lakh from an SBI ATM at Nongpoh on September 9.

Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy said on Sunday that one person Rahul Pegu was arrested from Hajo in Assam and based on his lead a police team conducted special operations on Friday morning at 2 am and arrested mastermind of the crime — Nirmal Das.

Nirmal Das was arrested from Madhavpur colony in Khanapara. Following this two more persons were arrested out of which one was held from Ganeshguri area of Guwahati.

Reddy informed that altogether ten people were involved in the incident.

Asked whether police have recovered the amount, he said that the miscreants had shared the money Rs 2.20 lakh each among themselves and they brought new motor cycles, mobile phones and clothes for their family.

Another person Ziaul Haq ( 21) was earlier involved in three cases of ATM looting. Besides another accused Pegu was earlier released from Nalbari jail on September 4, five days before he committed the ATM loot at Nongpoh.

“We are trying to recover all the money,” Reddy said adding that police have identified all the miscreants involved in the crime and very soon all of them world be behind the bars.
