Haflong, September 27, 2014: The Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), a national sanitation campaign, was launched in Dima Hasao district by HK Bora, Principal Secretary of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, here on Friday.

This mission undertaken by the Ministry of Sanitation and Drinking Water, Government of India, aims to provide all households in India with sanitary toilets. A huge awareness programme is being planned with a vision for a clean India by October 2, 2019, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. In Dima Hasao district, the programme was simultaneously launched at Haflong, Maibang and Umrangso.

On the occasion, a pledge was also administered by M Pangcho, District Nodal Officer of the mission. The programme concluded with a rally attended by officers and staff of various departments and local people who carried placards on sanitation. This was followed by a cleanliness drive on the Circuit House premises.

The programme was also attended by NCHAC Deputy Secretary H Haolai, vice chairman of the Town Committee J Poithong, executive engineer of the PHE (Haflong division) L Ali, the District Programme Manager of the National Health Mission and other officers and staff.

Talking to this correspondent, the executive engineer of the PHE, Haflong division, who is also the member secretary, disclosed that several other activities under the mission would be taken up during the current week and up to October 2.
