Imphal, September 14, 2014: Tribal and Endangered Languages Promotion Board (TELPB) has called for promotion of tribal dialects of the State.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, TELPB Convenor Dr Th Chandramani said that the Board is set to conduct a training programme to develop tribal dialects in December this year.
Language experts from different universities of other countries would take part in the said training programme, he said and added that UNESCO encourages promotion and protection of different languages, which are being spoken in different corners of the world.
Saying that some people ignore their own mother tongue and prefer to speak other languages, Dr Chandramani observed that such want for status symbol poses serious threat that could to the extinction of some language.
He added that Social Action for Tribal Areas Development had already organised a two-day workshop on development and promotion of tribal dialects at TRI Chingmeirong.
People from different tribal communities took part in the said workshop, he added.
Informing that an extensive survey to develop Thangal dialect has already been set in motion, Chandramani said that similar surveys for other dialects would also be conducted soon.
He added that the Board would put in efforts to give the Fundamental Right of text book learning in their mother own tongue to smaller communities as well.
TELB Chief Functionary Ambition Anthangmi said that the State has 34 Government recognised tribal communities and all these communities have their own indigenous cultural resources.
However, languages of these communities are yet to be scientifically researched.
