Tura, October 19, 2014: Two senior cadres of the ASAK outfit surrendered with arms in Baghmara in South Garo Hills taking the total in the district to five. Eight more have surrendered in West Garo Hills in the past two weeks.

The two cadres who surrendered yesterday also deposited one 9 mm pistol with 15 rounds and one 7.65 mm pistol with eight rounds and one wireless handset.

Police maintained that the Operation Hillstorm is finally reaping dividends as intensified operations have led to militant cadres giving up armed struggle.

“In South Garo Hills, police activities and operations have increased leading to cadres of various outfits coming forward to surrender. The coming days should see more militants surrendering”, said SGH SP Lakador Syiem.

“We are receiving a lot of help from civil society organisations, Church elders and residents who are bringing the militants to us. We are confident that the results of Operation Hillstorm will be better with time”, added Syiem.

Meanwhile, the police offensive against militancy continued unabated in South Garo Hills with the police apprehending two more militants yesterday. One militant, a juvenile, was caught from Gasuapara when he had come to extort money from a businessman, while another was caught from Agreng area in Nongalbibra.

“Last night, police caught one juvenile when he had come to collect extortion money. We suspect him to be a GNLA militant and questioning is on”, said Syiem.

In Nongalbibra, police launched an operation in Agreng area and nabbed one Alet G Marak. “We will book him under relevant sections once interrogation is completed. He is also suspected to be a GNLA member”, he added.
