New Delhi, October 10, 2014: China seems to have stolen a march over India in the race for Stilwell Road, as Beijing has already laid an excellent infrastructure network, while New Delhi is yet to make up its mind over reopening the historic road.

The Chinese connection in development of the World War II road, connecting Ledo with Kunming in Yunnan Province in China through Myanmar, is evident as China has constructed four-lane highways, laid crude and gas pipeline network and gained access to the markets in Myanmar.

All these came out vividly in photographs by Findlay Kember, who travelled the length of the old road, also known as the Ledo-Burma Road. Kember’s photographs are on display at a photo exhibition organised by India International Centre as part of its ‘IIC Experience: A Festival of the Arts’. The six-day extravaganza includes a focus on the North East and a focus on the First World War.
