Guwahati, August 26, 2014: Speaker Pranab Gogoi today referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Legislative Assembly and asked what action the AIUDF would take against him for his repeated mention during the Lok Sabha campaign about the presence of lakhs of illegal immigrants in Assam.

Gogoi said this after the Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes during the Question Hour after BPF MLA Pramila Rani Brahma mentioned the term “illegal migrants” during a supplementary question to Revenue Minister Prithibi Majhi.

Sherman Ali Ahmed, recently suspended from the AIUDF, rose to his feet and asked Brahma to either prove the existence of illegal immigrants or take back her words.

However, the MLAs from the BPF and BJP took a different stand and soon were seen exchanging words with the AIUDF legislators who all stood up from their seats.

Speaker Gogoi then interrupted and said there are illegal immigrants in Assam and hence the Foreigners Tribunals are in existence in the State.

However, when the AIUDF MLAs persisted with their protest, the Speaker mentioned Modi’s speeches where he had spoken about presence of lakhs of illegal immigrants and queried, “What will you do with him?”

Environment and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain said there was a feeling that some members were trying to play politics during the Question Hour and added that the State government was committed to detecting and deporting all immigrants who had come to Assam after March 25, 1971, while ensuring that genuine Indian citizens and all those who entered the State before that date would not be harassed.

But the AIUDF members then raised the issue of presence of illegal immigrants in the Kaziranga National Park and asked Hussain what steps were being taken to check that in case the matter was true.

Padma Hazarika, suspended AGP legislator, said, “There are foreigners in Assam and they should be expelled. There should be no attempt to gain political mileage out of it.”

When the AIUDF MLAs still persisted with their protest, the Speaker asked them to keep quiet. “There are illegal immigrants in Assam and we have to expel them using legal recourse,” he added, before the Assembly continued with the Question Hour.
