Nagaon, September 13, 2014: Fifty major clashes have taken place along the Assam-Nagaland border between 1984 and 2014 and 60,000 hectares of Assam land, which includes reserve forest, tea estates, cultivable land, etc., have been encroached on by Naga encroachers.
This was stated by Chandramohan Kakati, a retired administrative officer and a writer of repute, while delivering the annual lecture organised by the History Department of Khagarijan College. In the recent incident at Uriamghat, several persons were killed and over 10,000 people were rendered homeless, he added.
Addressing the lecture on ‘Assam-Nagaland border dispute in historical perspective,’ Kakati said that a number of agreements were signed by the Assam Government with its Nagaland counterpart in 1972, 1979 and 1985, but the neighbouring State is not willing to respect these pacts.
Kakati started his lecture by reading the report of AJ Mafatmilles and also added some references from Assam history. He opined that the Assam Government was responsible for giving indulgence to Nagaland by giving them Dimapur, which was the capital of the Kachari king.
Kakati appealed to all the 126 MLAs of the State to get united and talk with the Nagaland Government, and also take into confidence the Naga Hoho, Baptist Mission and both the factions of the NSCN. He further suggested the creation of a post of Border Deputy Commissioner to look into the border problems of the State.
Kakati hoped that the new Government at the Centre would take positive steps to solve the problem which is a precondition for the development of the area.
The principal of college, Dr Sagar Boruah chaired the meet and introduced the topic to the audience. Rayhanul Ahmed, head of the Department of History, stated the significance of the lecture.
Kakati later donated his honorarium in the form of an award to the best student of the department. Teachers and students also took part in the interaction.
