Tura, September 18, 2014: A deserter of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), who had run off with an INSAS rifle, was today killed in an encounter with the joint forces of the North Garo Hills and the Army.
The killed militant had allegedly been terrorising residents of the region and was involved in the kidnapping of a woman school teacher, Sandia K Sangma on July 29 last.
The militant, who was also a leader of a new gang of dacoits, was killed in Bangsi Minol village, near Dainadubi. He has been identified as Teseng Sangma (Werang), while another militant Gobin Sangma was able to escape.
The police along with the Army launched an operation last night. At about 5.30 am today, the GNLA deserter was killed in the encounter. An INSAS rifle, along with eight rounds of ammunition, an INSAS magazine and money were recovered from the encounter spot.
The recovery of the INSAS rifle has led to a frenetic search for the original holder of the gun. Teseng was under the command of Ajan Momin (Jimmy), the area commander of East Garo Hills before deserting the outfit.
