Prof Dutta has submitted his resignation letter to the President of India, who is the appointing authority, it is leant.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Prof Dutta said he had joined with the hope of providing a sense of direction to the NEC as members are expected to. “But of late the atmosphere in the NEC is no longer conducive for any kind of real planning and development work,” Prof Dutta said adding that although his is a tenured post he has decided to leave.
Members of the NEC are appointed for a specific tenure but it is learnt that after the Modi Government took over, the members were asked to resign.
The other member is MP Bezbaruah, IAS, a retired Central Government official. It is not known whether Bezbaruah has also submitted his resignation.
Sources in the NEC said that recently when the DoNER Minister VK Singh met with state chief ministers, he did not invite the two members which is an affront. Sources also said that programmes and projects in the NEC are set to be delayed since the Minister is asking for all files to be carted to Delhi.
“The minister insists on going through each and every file which was never the case before,” an NEC official said, adding that this would lead to unnecessary delays and lapsing of funds.
