Imphal, September 19, 2014: The Bamboo Foundation Manipur (BFM) observed World Bamboo Day here yesterday. State Mission Director of National Bamboo Mission H Brajamani Sharma, President BFM Chingtam Luwang and others attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, President All Manipur Working Journalists Union Wangkhemcha Shyamjai said that the first World Bamboo Day was observed in Thailand to reclaim a desert in 2009.
After plating bamboo and other plants the desert has become a forest called Royal Forest.
Of the 57 varieties of bamboo in India, 44 are found in the North East while Manipur Forest department has identified 35 species including 12 industrial bamboo varieties in the State.
