Tura, August 29, 2014: In a major tragedy, a speeding night bus enroute to Shillong veered off the road and fell into a gorge leading to death of four passengers and injuries to 28 others. The accident happened near Dolloonggre village, about 45 kms from here at about 10 pm yesterday.

A policeman and a woman were amongst the dead. The bus driver was critically injured.

While three of the passengers died on the spot, another succumbed to his injuries at the Tura Civil Hospital.

According to information, the bus bearing registration ML-08 0609 left here at 8 pm and was headed for Shillong. The driver lost control of the vehicle which was said to be speeding and fell into a gorge.

All the 28 injured, including four females were brought to Tura Civil Hospital around 2 am today and given medical aid. Six very critical cases have been referred to Guwahati.

A medical team from Tura Civil Hospital rushed to the spot at about 12.30 am and attended to the patients. The West Garo Hills police and BSF led the rescue operations. The rescue team had to cut the bus in half to bring people out of the mangled mess.

The deceased have been identified as Aditya Hajong (26), librarian at Tura Government College, Pelina Momin (39), a resident Chengmari Chutipara of Goalpara district, Bhim Thapa, a constable of 3rd Battalion and Kiripson Sangma (35), a resident of Baithalangsu in Karbi Anglong.

This is the second bus tragedy in recent memory in the Garo Hills and comes three months after another bus fell into a gorge near Baghmara in South Garo Hills leading to the death of eight passengers.
