Guwahati, August 29, 2014: The Assembly today passed eight Bills – including five effecting a hike in the salaries and allowances of ministers, MLAs, Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Under the new Act, the Chief Minister’s salary has been revised to Rs 90,000 per month from the existing Rs 65,000. The revised daily allowances are Rs 1,500 (within the State) and Rs 2,000 (outside the State), while the sitting allowance per day is Rs 1,500.

The ministers’ salary has been revised to Rs 80,000 from the existing Rs 60,000, while their enhanced daily allowances will be same as those of the Chief Minister.

Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers will get a salary of Rs 75,000 and Rs 70,000 respectively – with the same daily allowances.

The MLAs’ salary has been revised to Rs 60,000 per month from the existing Rs 40,000. Their daily allowances are same as those of ministers. The MLAs will also be entitled to a revised pension of Rs 30,000 per month besides medical allowance of Rs 15,000 per month, and a maximum travelling facility of Rs 40,000 per annum.

The Speaker will receive a revised salary of Rs 80,000 from the existing Rs 60,000, along with revised daily allowances at par with ministers. The Deputy Speaker’s salary has been revised to Rs 75,000 from Rs 55,000, together with daily allowances at par with ministers.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly will now be entitled to a revised salary of Rs 80,000 from the existing Rs 60,000, along with enhanced daily allowances at par with ministers.

The revised salaries will materialize with immediate effect, following a notification to be issued by the Government, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka said.

Five of the Bills passed today related to salaries and allowances of ministers, MLAs, Speaker and Deputy Speaker, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. The other three Bills were – The Assam Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill, The Assam Contingency Fund (Augmentation of Corpus) Bill and The Assam Agricultural University (Amendment) Bill.
