Bongaigaon, August 21, 2014: Militants of the NDFB (Songbijit faction) today gunned down a 16-year-old Class X student, Priya Basumatary, in the Dwimuguri locality under Runikhata police station in Chirang district to avenge the killing of five cadres of the outfit by security forces on Wednesday.

As per local sources, a group of NDFB(S) cadres, armed with sophisticated weapons, came to the forest village of Dwimuguri and compelled the local residents to gather at a place where they shot Priya dead for allegedly passing information to her boyfriend, a cadre of the Ranjan Daimary faction of the NDFB, about the presence of five NDFB(S) cadres at Dwimuguri in the residence of one Mahendra Basumatary on Tuesday night. On the basis of the inputs given by her boyfriend, the police and security forces conducted an operation and killed those five cadres on the spot.

Police could not recover the body of the girl, who was a daughter of a poor farmer Niren Basumatary, and a student of the Runikhata Girls’ High School, till this afternoon, Chirang SP Ranjan Bhuyan said. When asked, he could not reveal the details of the incident.

The Ranjan Daimary faction of NDFB has been helping the police and security forces against the NDFB(S) cadres in BTAD, alleged an NDFB(S) source, who also expressed the apprehension that a section of government-backed NDFB (Ranjan) would allegedly be responsible for fratricidal killings among the militant groups in BTAD very soon, if the Union government does not take tough measures against those “so-called pro-talk” NDFB(R) militants.
