Landslips covering an area of one km have taken place at Phangsangbasti near Sonapur in Meghalaya triggering suspension of vehicular movement on the National Highway. Reports said hundreds of passenger vehicles and trucks remain stranded on both sides of the landslip area. Vegetables and other perishable items in trucks have started decomposing.
Though PWD workers of Meghalaya have started clearing the debris, their efforts have fallen short in clearing the NH so far. There are allegations Meghalaya Government is not taking proper initiative to re-open the national highway while Tripura Government also remain silent on the suspension of vehicular movement on the NH-44.
Reports from Sonapur said one litre water is being sold at Rs 50 while a Rs 5 biscuit packet is selling at Rs 30 at the landslide affected area. The condition of the NH at Kukirang, Ratacherra, Umkiang and Charkilo is really worrisome and the vehicular movement could stop anytime.
Suspension of vehicular movement on the NH has already resulted in escalated prices of essential items like potato and onion in the State.
