Itanagar, September 8, 2014: Five new checkgates with CCTVs will be set up along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary, police said two days after the body of an abducted trader from Kerala was found near Doimukh in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Superintendent of police Seju Kuruvilla said three persons involved in the abduction of trader K.P. Chako have been arrested.
Chako ran a chain of bakeries in Itanagar and was abducted on August 28. He had sustained a bullet injury while being dragged out of his residence when the abductors fired at his arm as he refused to go with them.
CCTV footage showed Chako battling to fight back the abductors but was eventually overpowered.
The two vehicles used by the abductors were found abandoned at Hoj-Potin Road, around 60km from here.
Kuruvilla had yesterday ruled out the involvement of militants but said the culprits belonged to “some well-organised group”. He added that eight more suspects have been identified, involving known criminals from both within and outside the state.
Director-general of police S. Nithianandam said the government had sanctioned the establishment of checkgates at Yupia-Hoj-Sagalee tri-junction, Dikrong bridge, Jully, Chimpu-Poma and Chimpu-Holongi along the inter-state border.
Hoping to allay fears of rising crimes in the city, Nithianandam said an anti-extortion cell would be set up to monitor such crimes.
Acting on the recommendation of the police, the Itanagar deputy commissioner has issued orders under Section 144 CrPC instructing all banks to install CCTV cameras and to deploy armed guards.
Inspector-general of police (law and order) I.D. Shukla said, “We learnt a lot from the incident and will make our system foolproof so that such incidents do not occur in future.”
A string of high-profile crimes involving people residing along the inter-state border has recently rocked the Arunachal Pradesh capital.
On September 2, a man was abducted from Gohpur in Assam by armed unknown persons. After two days, he managed to escape his captors and return home safely. The police are yet to make any arrests.
