Guwahati, September 12, 2014: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally arrested singer Sadananda Gogoi in connection with the multi-crore rupee Saradha chit-fund scam, triggering apprehensions that some more arrests could follow suit in the State.
Gogoi, who is believed to have acted as a linkman between Saradha chief and many big shots, like former Assam DGP Sankar Baruah and former minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been questioned on several occasions by the country’s top investigating agency.
Gogoi’s arrest is expected to open the Pandora’s Box with likely arrests of more influential individuals of the State not being ruled out by the CBI.
The CBI had recently carried out search operations in the houses of former ministers Himanta Biswa Sarma and Anjan Dutta, besides former DGP Sankar Baruah and singer Sadananda Gogoi.
Gogoi was even taken to CBI’s Kolkata office for questioning. From Bollywood icons to political heavyweights, both in Assam and West Bengal, the multi-crore rupee Saradha chit-fund scam have cast apprehensions on the role of a number of bigwigs.
Thousands of micro investors in both Assam and West Bengal had been duped by the Saradha chit-fund company triggering massive uproar across the State from time to time.
The Saradha group, which even owned a media house in Assam, is believed to have given kickbacks to a host of influential individuals who rolled out red carpets for the business ventures of the controversial group in different parts of the State.
“Individuals even realized protection from the head of the business group,” the CBI had claimed.
